Abstract

Crafting Value is a research practice that considers the concept of value through the investigation of materials and site. The work is guided by a concern for the ongoing destruction of the environment and driven by a desire to establish a regenerative practice of interior design.

The collection of investigations and projects is grounded in a physical mode of making and participation, whilst supported by philosophical dialog. Early investigations were conducted across two locations, a working property outside Trentham, Victoria and a house in the suburb of Brunswick, Melbourne. Recontextualization, framing and documentation techniques were used to investigate why we value objects and where their materials come from. Building upon this, a paddock on the property in Trentham was chosen as a site and testing ground to develop the research project into a practice of process. By working closely with materials from site in an explorative and repetitious way, a focus is placed on slow action, learning from physical engagement with our environment, and providing opportunities for collective experience.

The project asks questions such as: what constitutes materials? How can we give back to the land rather simply take from it? What was here before? What do we want to be here after? The research has highlighted that investigating site and materials is not just expressed through the final outcome but by the process of doing/making/collaborating.

It poses the question: how can interior design processes establish a regenerative practice, that considers land, materials and community?
